August 27 Science Teaching: A Reconnaissance

Active Reading: Scan Minds on Science on the Net, and read at least one section in Chapter 1 that piques your curiosity AND read Richard Feynman's article about science teaching in the Gazette section of Chapter 1 of MoS. Active Writing: How did today's class impact your initial ideas about what science teaching might be all about? Write first in your log, then make a post in the Course Bulletin Board (this is simply a link to your "my webct" page. Optional Activity: Interview some of your students using the protocol in Inquiry Activity 1.3. If you do this activity you can include it as one of your Portfolio choices. |

Activities: Try one of the activities we did in class with one or more of your classes. We'll go online during the week of September 3 and discuss some of your students' impressions. We'll also discuss your results in class next time we meet. Active Readings: Read the very short piece by J. Piaget entitled "To understand is to invent" and see how Piaget's theoretical ideas relate to the practical work we did tonight. From Practice to theory: Go to Chapter 2 of Minds on Science and scan the sections 2.1 through 2.15. What theories support the active learning strategies we looked at tonight? We'll discuss some of these ideas on-line next week, as well in class on the 10th. We'll also post our ideas on the class discussion board. |

Register for the International Clean Air Project. (See Project Ozone) sometime this week. Begin thinking about how you will involve some of your students, and perhaps another colleague in the project. Data collection materials will be provided by JH. Active Reading: Read this online article about the impact of global projects: Hassard, J. and Weisberg, J. 1999. The emergence of global thinking among American and Russian youth as a contribution to public understanding. International Journal of Science Education, Vol. 21, No. 7, 731 - 743. Net Research: Search the Internet to find out about your assigned Internet Based Science Project (you'll find your project linked from this webpage.....be ready to give a short report in class next week---you'll have to tell us about the project: you'll have access to a computer and projector connected to the Net!
