Program of Study


Goals of the TEEMS Program in Science Education

The TEEMS Program is designed to prepare teachers who posses a range of knowledge, abilities, and skills including:

a thorough grasp of the knowledge base undergirding teaching practice based on constructivism,

a repertoire of instructional strategies, and skills to apply these to the mathematics and science education of students in middle and high schools

an understanding and the ability to use methods of inquiry and research findings in making professional decisions.

ability to transcend their own personal experiences in the classroom as students, and subsequently as teachers, in order to make instructional decisions based on professional knowledge

a thorough grasp of a philosophy of teaching that is based on reflective thinking, inquiry and experiential learning, and the ability to apply this to classroom practice

a comprehensive understanding of methods of student assessment and measurement including observations, performance testing, portfolio assessment and standardized examinations, and the ability to interpret and use the results

appreciate the ethical and moral responsibilities in a system of compulsory education

*Professional Courses: EPY 7080 or EPY 7100; EPSF 7100, EPSF 7110, or EPSF 7120; EPRS 7900 or EPRS 7910; EXC 401

**Content Courses: 6000-level and above science courses including the Philosophy of Science; consult the Arts and Sciences Graduate Bulletin. You may take courses from the following departments: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Philosophy and Physics. You need to have five content courses in your curriculum. It is possible to use previous graduate science courses in this part of your curriculum.
